Law, Policy, and Governance

The ACPA & NASPA (2016) competency rubric lists four capacities that create the Law,
Policy, and Governance (LPG) competency: laws and legal systems, governance, ethical and
inclusive application of policy, and civic engagement. An individual’s ability, outlook, and
understanding of governance structure, legal frameworks, and the application of legal constructs
in their work and how to use them to inform their practice. I am currently in the early stages of an intermediate level of proficiency for this competency area.

Last semester, I along worked with my resident assistants and , held a voter registration program within the residence hall. Through that this program, we were able to provide information on the upcoming election, as well as encourage and help students reregister for to voting. This program allowed us to describe how state laws were either helping or hurting them as students. In order to help these residents understand why it was important to vote, I had to educate myself on the matter. This program helped me understand how the current governmental policies not only could affect the students, but myself and my job as a residence director

Moreover, my experience in my previous role as a residence director for a first-year building, I had to ensure that all of my students in the building attended a workshop on interpersonal violence. The Prevention, Advocacy, and Wellness Services (PAWS) office at Fredonia works to reduce the incidence, prevalence, and severity of substance abuse and interpersonal violence related problems among Fredonia students. It is a school policy that our first-year students attend this workshop to become aware of this resource as well as become educated on these issues. As a residence director for a first-year building, I frequently received calls from parents in regards to their children and their personal information. Because of the position I held, I had access to confidential information that is not accessible to the public. I have to abide by FERPA and not disclose any information such as where a student lives and their email address. It is policy and law that I cannot share any of this information. I was able to share general information about the processes within residence life as well as information that is on their website. To uphold FERPA, I had to shred any paperwork that I did not need with students information on it. In addition, when an incident is reported, I had to report the incident information to the offices necessary and not disclose it to any outsiders.

I have also had the experience with upholding residence life policy, as well as state laws. I had to address an incident regarding a student smoking marijuana in the residence hall. This resident broke state law, which deems marijuana as illegal and our residence life policy of smoking in the residence hall. In addition, this resident also covered the smoke detector in his room. I had the job of documenting the situation as well as contacting University Police to uphold policy as well as New York State laws.

During the summer of 2019, I was able to study study and travel to Kyiv, Ukraine and Krakow/Rzeszow, Poland to study recent student movements at Ukraine and Polish Higher Education Institutions about social reforms. In my experience I was able to recognize efforts in Dortmund, Germany to understand how higher education professionals at German institutions are managing the current migration trends of New Germans. This course and study abroad experience allowed me to develop understanding of the relationship between national laws and policies and institutional practices for supporting vulnerable populations such as refugees and immigrants
