Values, Philosophy, and History
Comprised of five sections outlined in the ACPA/NASPA rubric, the Values, Philosophy,
and History (VPH) competency area hones in on the individuals knowledge of the profession’s
beliefs, history and philosophy. The five competency areas in VPH are historical foundations,
theoretical foundations, societal and cultural context, professional service, and campus and civic
engagement. Serving as a foundation of learning for student affairs professionals, the VPH
competency area is incorporated in all of the work that student affairs professionals do, whether
it be for research or theory development. As the profession of student affairs progresses, being
conscious of these foundations will ensure that the field is on the right track to evolving and
changing. I am at an intermediate level of proficiency in this competency area.
The American Higher Education course (HEA 616) has truly given me the knowledge on the history of higher education as well as a historical perspective on its evolution from 1636 and beyond. The American Higher Education course has also given me the opportunity to recognize and analyze critical periods of history and the historical developments in higher education. My experience with the coursework has definitely been supplemental to my foundational proficiency level in this area. While taking HEA 616, I was able to work alongside a colleague to educate the class on an institution’s shift from college being available and accessible to white, wealthy, white men from upper echelon society to a near universal rite of passage. One of the papers assigned to the students in HEA 616 allowed me to gain historical context on an area of higher education that interests me while also giving me the responsibility to research and synthesize my findings and the evolution from its early days to the modern norms and practices.
The readings required in Student Affairs Administration (HEA 618), has further strengthened my competency in this area. Readings such as the Student Personnel Point of View (SPPV), has helped me to understand the past of student affairs. The SPPV provides great foundational aspects that are still present today. I believe the SPPV document serves as a great framework to how we view student affairs today. The holistic view of learning for the student that the SPPV discusses is one that is present in education today. Knowing where we have come from is important to understand where we are going.
