Middle Management

Working as a Residence Director, I have experience being in the middle of management. I supervised 5 resident assistants while being supervised by the Director of Residence Life. Being a mid-level manager was a unique experience as I was the bridge from the leadership of the office and the front runners of the department. Being a mid-level manager was a tricky task because I had to uphold standards, implement rules, and supervise employees and students, all while trying to stay true to myself. It was tricky upholding rules that I personally did not agree with but had to because it was my job. If I could add one more aspect to my supervisory philosophy, it would be to express radical candor while showing integrity. I think it is important to show your staff your true self and be open when you do not agree with something or that you dislike something. Although you may not agree with the rules put in place, showing integrity and doing what is told of you should always be practiced. It is important for midlevel managers to uphold rules and directions from their supervisors because ultimately, they are a representation of the company or organization.
